The sheer cutting power of petrol chainsaws makes them a thrill to use. It also makes them dangerous. In fact, the sense of danger is probably part of the thrill.
Still, operating a chainsaw can be quite safe, as long as your machine is well maintained, you use adequate protective equipment and you follow a set of simple rules. Tournevie now offers you a full-day course in chainsaw safety, during which you will learn to systematically apply those rules. After this course, you’ll be able to handle a chainsaw in a safe and ergonomic way. This course or an equivalent one is a condition for being allowed to lend out a petrol chainsaw from Tournevie.
The training covers the following topics:
- Equipment: chainsaw safety features, daily maintenance, protective equipment
- Safe working environment, preparation for use, starting procedure
- Safe cutting practices, including cutting sequence for wood under tension/compression
You will spend most of he day doing practical exercises on horizontal and vertical logs with different types of saws, allowing you to embed safe working practices, improve your control over the saw, and get used to specific techniques such as meeting and boring cuts.
Practical details
Who: open to anybody over 18 years old who would like to use a chain saw. No previous experience required.

Price: €30 for Tournevie members, €50 for non-members. Since we need to arrange for wooden logs, fuel, catering etc., the fee is non-refundable if you can't make it.
Language will be adapted (NL/FR/EN) to suit all participants
Note: This course covers the topics detailed in European Chainsaw Standard level 1, chainsaw maintenance and crosscutting, chapters §1, 2A, 2D, 2E, 3, 4, 6. However the certificate you will get at the end of the training is not recognised under ECS. If you’d like to obtain an ECS certificate, we recommend Inverde’s training programme.
